The principal urban concentrations of Mauritius are located inland split over the district called the Plaine Wilhems. The major towns are Curepipe, Quatre-Bornes, Vacoas / Phoenix, Beau Bassin / Rose-Hill. Each of these towns possesses its individual charm, places of interest and various shopping opportunities.

● Curepipe
was founded at the very beginning of the French colonisation of the island. Curepipe is situated at the highest point of Plaine Wilhems and has a temperate climate with cool winters and rainy, humid summers. Curepipe and Floreal has some good shopping addresses and many view points. The most interesting feature of Curepipe is its extinct volcano, Trou aux Cerfs. This crater offers a excellent panoramic view of the central plateau at its summit. Other interesting aspects of Curepipe are its Botanical Gardens and its many distinctively colonial houses.

Vacoas / Phoenix, is a historic site to see as many buildings which still exist today were founded by the British since the World War. The town lies between Curepipe and Quatre Bornes in the western highlands region of the country, about 16 km south of Port Louis. The Special Mobile Force (SMF), is an integral part of the Mauritius Police Force and now occupies the barracks of the former British Garrison. Tamarind Waterfalls : Located at Henrietta, the Tamarind Waterfalls are more than 240 m high over seven steps. It is difficult and exhausting to go there, but taking a bath in the cold water there is the right reward.

Rose Hill and Beau-Bassin have an outstanding number of shopping arcades and shops and its market is attractive. One of the most interesting features of Rose Hill is its theatre, Le Plaza, which has become the most important landmark of the cultural life of the island.
Beau Bassin is mostly residential and has a public garden, the Balfour Garden, which offers a stunning viewpoint. Recent major infrastructural developments such as the Ebene Cybercity and the University of Mauritius at Reduit have given this region an additional value to these towns.

Quatre Bornes is the closest town to Flic en Flac. Is a calm and pleasant city which become very lively during the popular market days (Thursdays and Sundays). Each year, the market attracts thousands of tourists looking for great shopping at bargain prices. Nevertheless a number of shops, shopping centres, restaurants and some hotels offer extra opportunities to experience Mauritius in a different way. Commercial complexes like the Orchard Centre and Shoprite, offer a whole variety of products and services.
